I was set free yesterday by a doctor I was seeing for some problems that started 4 years ago. It was a big milestone. I started to see him in November of 2002. I had some really scary bloodwork happening and he’s a specialist. I was sent there by my GP. He was cautious with me. He explained so calmly that the situation was right on the brink. I realized I had the power to save myself from a lifetime of irreversible damage. He found out that I had B12 deficiency. If you have this your body doesn’t absorb B12, so you need monthly shots. It’s simple, but if you don’t get it, you could have nerve damage that can’t be fixed. He also had me take a bone marrow biopsy. I wasn’t really freaked out at the time, but now I look back and think, “wow, I probably should have been freaked out”. But it was my doctor that soothed my fears. He was so calm when he explained our next steps. Even though he was succeeding in communicating that the tests we were undergoing were serious, he made me feel safe. He made me feel like he was going to take care of me no matter what was wrong.

So he found the B12 deficit, he got me on monthly shots. I now give myself the shots. I’ve come to live with the abnormality within the routine of my life. He also inspired me to start fixing my health. I pretty much stopped drinking soda the next day. From there I continued and to this day continue a life long journey toward health.

My actions have made a difference. My strange readings are back to normal. The doctor said we didn’t need to follow up anymore. I seem to have made it through this scare and don’t need him anymore. He set me free. I feel proud of how I took control and continue to this day to stay conscious of my health and pay attention to my actions every day. It was almost like a graduation. I felt a tremendous amount of gratitude and accomplishment. It’s really helpful to have some professional assistance, but in the end, we all to have to save ourselves.

I am not mechanically inclined. I never have been. It’s probably a lack of patience and an general lack of manual dexterity that combine to frustrate me so much that I can’t really take the time.

As I’ve been exploring photography lately I thought it might be fun to try shooting with the same kind of camera Diane Arbus used. She used a medium format film. I found several of these on ebay and picked one up about a month ago. When it arrived it dawned on me that I needed to load the film. It did not come with instructions, so I tried, even though I am really bad at this kind of thing, to make it work. I got the film in but it was basically jammed in backwards. I left it sit for several weeks because I just didn’t know how to fix it.

Today I decided I should try to tackle it. After much frustration and in the end, a pile of broken camera and exposed film I made a decision. I am a digital photographer. Film is not for me. I tried, I was pretty good with band aid box cameras back in the day, but now without the hassle, I find a much faster and less frustrating path to expression. I’ve talked to many photographers and quite a few of them says ‘film is so much better’. I didn’t agree but everyone has their opinion, their life experience, what they get used to. I gave it a chance and my decision is this.

Digital rocks. No going back for me. That’s not to say my decision is my opinion and declaration for all, I just don’t want to spend time and frustration in place I don’t need to. Life is too short.

Digital is so much better. But that’s just me.

I watched both Ned Lamont and Joe Lieberman last night on the News Hour with Jim Lehrer.

I just want to say, I don’t think Joe has gotten over that loss and the fact that he is not the vice president right now. His arguments are weak at best. And he’s not respecting the process he claims to uphold. The PEOPLE said no Joe. So just stop.

Basically the Democrats in Connecticut voted in the democratic primary. They voted for Ned Lamont and not Joe Lieberman. It was close, but the people chose Ned. Joe is now running as an ‘Independent’ democrat. So basically he thinks he knows more than the people. Which may or may not be true but we live in a two party system. It’s the reality and these days it just doesn’t feel like either choice is good. But because of the way we vote, electoral college and all, it’s impossible to break to realistically think that a third party can work. I know, I know, ‘what about Jesse Ventura?’ Well he’s the exception that proves the rule. Also that was a state election not a national one.

If you really don’t like the system you should work for voting reform. They do other things in other countries, ranking systems and such make it easy for more than two people to run. However, why would the people in power vote for a fundamental change to how they got there? It might be a threat to them so of course, they won’t change status quo. Some states are doing some work to change this but for now a two party system is our reality and the people told Joe to go and he’s disrespecting the people. Considering the job he wants is to represent the people, I think this action is pretty much in direct conflict. But then I guess the world is full of all kinds of hypocrisy. This is just more proof.

We went to the store tonight and an amazing show call ‘30 Days’ was available there, for free. I personally would have paid for this show, but it was free!!!!

OK.

The show is Morgan Spurlock of Super Size Me Fame. The concept is that someone lives ‘a mile in another’s shoes’ for 30 days. This episode was about a Minuteman who went to live with a family of 7 illeagal immigrants in a one room apt. in LA.

Wow.

Watching this put the story together. This is inhumane. Keep them out. Send them home. Do the people saying that have any idea where they are sending these people? This is human suffering for no good reason. To me, that’s not worth it.

As I mentioned in my last post, I’ve got an art show hanging at the local coffee shop. I’ve also created online galleries for the show so people not nearby can view it and so it lives on beyond August. (It’s showing til the end of the month.)

I shared my news with most everyone I know. I think this might have been the best part of the experience, the feedback from everyone.

My favorite so far was the feedback from the artist that inspires me to really see:

“…you don’t fully understand your own work
until you see it on the wall. a show is not an end, rather a road map for
what’s next.”

Such wisdom.

I’m an incredibly lucky person to have such guidance/freedom in my artistic exploration and to have many, many other people interested enough to take a look at my online art and give me feedback. I’m truly honored by that.

Here’s the info for the show if you can make it. It’s hanging all of August.

Cuppa Java
400 Penn Avenue South
Minneapolis, 55405

(Off 394 exit)

Here’s the show on Flickr:

Keyword:
