ART CAR FACTS

In Minneapolis

The annual Wheels as Art event, presented by Intermedia Arts during the LynLake Street Fair, is one of the three largest annual Art Car events in the nation (along with the events in Houston and San Francisco).

The fifth annual Wheels as Art kicks off on Friday, August 13, at 8 p.m., with the official Wheels as Art Symposium at Intermedia Arts, Minneapolis. The rally, parade, fashion show, and judging follow on Saturday, August 14, commencing at 1 p.m. at Lake Calhoun and finishing at sundown at Intermedia Arts.

Among other activities, the symposium features a presentation on the history of art cars in Minnesota and around the world by art car artist and Macalester College professor Ruthann Godollei. She also gave this presentation at Houston's Roadside Attractions this year.

As the times evolve, the term "art car" has proven too limiting. This event features art bikes, art skates, art carts, art wagons, and art "what’s-its," all acknowledged in the awards category "Best Contraption." The "Best Lowrider" award pays tribute to that near-forgotten era of pop culture that gave us bell bottoms and heavy eyeliner.

Artistic expression spills beyond the streets and onto the runway at the Art Car Fashion Show, where artists strut fashions made from car parts or elements of the décor on their Art Cars.

Jan D. Elftmann, Wheels as Art coordinator and creator of the "Cork Truck," will drive her award-winning labor of love in the parade as well. The "Cork Truck," perhaps the LynLake area’s best-known art vehicle, took third place last year at the Orange Show in Houston, Texas, among more than 200 entries.

In the Nation

Today, over 300 art cars exist in the United States, some gaining notoriety in such famed art journals as The New Art Examiner (December 1995), The Smithsonian (March 1996), Life Magazine (April 1998), and The New York Times (April 1997).

Houston, Texas, hosts the country’s most renowned art car rally, called Roadside Attractions: The Artists Parade. This spring the rally draws tens of thousands of people to a ball, a symposium, and a parade and competition of over 200 art cars.

Some other large art car events include the ArtCar Fest in San Francisco, California, and the Burning Man rally, which takes place in northern Nevada’s Black Rock Desert.
