WELCOME
From
its inception 25 years ago, Intermedia Arts has transformed itself
into a catalyst that fosters community dialogue and change through
art. Formerly known as University Community Video, Intermedia
Arts began as a collective of social activists using what was
at that time an exciting new form of expression: video.
The
organization provided training and access to video equipment and
facilities, and dedicated itself to empowering voices not included
in the mainstream. Necessity and good luck prompted Intermedia
Arts' move to its current location at 2822 Lyndale Avenue South,
at the intersection of some of Minneapolis's most diverse neighborhoods:
Lyndale, Lowry Hill East, Whittier, and CARAG.
In a recent $1.4 million capital campaign, the community successfully
met the challenge with corporate, foundation, and individual gifts.
Intermedia
Arts is a presenter and ally of visual, performance, film, and
video artists from Minnesota, surrounding states, and around the
world -- artists who create socially and politically challenging
work that explores connections between artistic disciplines as
well as between the arts and society. Intermedia Arts does this
through a variety of commissioning programs and mentorship opportunities.
Intermedia Arts is recognized for developing new and diverse forms
of artistic expression, and for giving voice to communities that
are traditionally under-recognized.
Recent
major or ongoing projects include the annual "Wheels as Art"
parade and rally, D’a de los Muertos celebrations in collaboration
with the Chicano/Latino arts and cultural organization CreArte,
and "Minneapolis 55408," an annual art show that pays tribute
to the wealth of creative neighbors residing within this zip code.
Activities such as these exemplify Intermedia Arts' unique initiative,
involvement, and mission. Intermedia Arts is a catalyst that builds
understanding among people through art.
